Course Overview


Aim:

To create a general awareness regarding the celestial objects for the public and also to satisfy their curiosity about the subject. The course will include hands-on computer-based activities to demonstrate the learnt concepts.

Faculty:

The faculty for this course consists of the permanent teaching staff at the institute as well as the internationally acclaimed scientists and professors of various scientific institutions and research organizations in and around Bangalore.

Syllabus:

The syllabus for this course is framed to cover the basics involved in understanding the astronomical concepts like identification of constellations, measurement of brightness and distances of stars, types of stars, celestial coordinates, optical telescopes, sun, solar system, and galaxies.

Classroom Sessions:

This is a short duration course in General Astronomy with emphasis on Citizen Science.

Field Trips:

Currently suspended in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Registration and Admission:
  • Basic requirement for admission: Interest in the subject of Astronomy.
  • No restrictions on the academic background or age.
  • As the number of seats is limited to 30, admissions will be made on first-come-first-served basis.
  • e-Certificates will be issued to the individual students at the end of the course. 
  • Outstation students are requested to make their own arrangements for accommodation.(not applicable for online classroom sessions)
